Police: Driver Speeding Before Crash That Killed Two

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Two people were killed Sunday in an early-morning crash on Route 2 near the Alewife MBTA station in Cambridge, police said.Photos |
VideoPolice said Vytautas Narkevicius, 60, of Somerville, was driving an SUV eastbound on the highway when he attempted to turn onto Route 16 and lost control. Police said he hit a lightpole and rolled over, landing on top of a Volkswagen that was stopped at a traffic light.Vytautas Narkevicius and his wife, Mary Narkevicius, 59, of Somerville, were killed in the accident. Eduvigs Zayas, 53, of Medford, was riding in the back seat and was injured.“They were so sweet, always a smile on their face,” said Krishna Subramanian, a neighbor of the victims.“They just loved life, and they seemed to be such energetic people. I’m actually so very sad and disappointed that this has happened to them.”The juvenile driver of the Volkswagen suffered minor injuries. Two other juveniles in the Volkswagen were not injured.State police blame speed for the crash. "He was going higher than reasonable for the road conditions," said trooper Brian Roderick.The road was closed eastbound near the Fresh Pond Parkway after the crash at 5 a.m.
