A MetroWest police officer got a surprise on Wednesday when he stopped to check out several broken boxes on the side of the road -- they were filled with bees.

Framingham police Officer James Sebastian spotted the 10 boxes on the side of Edgell Road on Wednesday at about 9 p.m. When he moved closer to inspect the boxes, he realized the boxes were actually hives filled with buzzing honeybees, the MetroWest Daily News reported.

"When ... he sees what they were, he called on the radio and said, 'I'm not quite sure what I'm going to do, but we need beekeepers here,' " police spokesman Lt. Paul Shastany told the paper.

The owner of the hives, Andrew Reseska, of Holliston's Reseska Apiaries, said he was delivering a truckload of hives to Sudbury when a strap securing them broke. He came back and corralled the bees, the paper said.

"There were bees all over the place, but they weren't swarming," Shastany said. "They were content."

No charges will be filed.
