WASHINGTON -- Mortgage rates on are the rise again as financial markets become more convinced the Federal Reserve will boost interest rates further.

Mortgage giant Freddie Mac reported Thursday that rates on 30-year, fixed-rate mortgages averaged 6.63 percent this week -- up slightly from 6.62 percent last week.

This week's rate was a full percentage point above where rates were a year ago.

A competing survey from Bankrate.com showed that the average 30-year, fixed-rate mortgage inched higher -- from 6.69 percent to 6.71 percent.

The increase in mortgage rates followed Wednesday's release of the May Consumer Price Index, which showed rising inflation.

Bankrate.com reported that the inflation news virtually assures another rate hike -- the 17th straight -- when the Federal Open Market Committee meets on June 28-29.

Rates on 30-year mortgages had fallen last week after hitting a high the previous week of 6.67 percent, the highest level in nearly four years.

Analysts are predicting that home sales will decline by around 10 percent this year as a gradual increase in mortgage rates cools activity.

Other categories of mortgages also rose this week, according to Freddie Mac.

Rates on 15-year, fixed-rate mortgages, a popular choice for refinancing, increased to 6.25 percent, up from 6.23 percent last week.

Rates on one-year adjustable rate mortgages rose to 5.66 percent, up from 5.63 percent last week.
