While some took their chances doing the usual commute during the week of the Democratic National Convention, others adjusted their work schedule to accommodate the event.

NewsCenter 5's Rhondella Richardson reported that one company is offering a new work at home alternative that is being used by several Boston-area companies.

Jeff Cody, who works in marketing and normally has more than an hour commute, chanced driving into the office Wednesday, but he didn't have to because all week his company, Intranets.com, provided a free link to the workplace for him and other commuters from various professions in various parts of the state.

The Web site allows businesses to schedule meetings and check on co-workers' and clients' availability. Best of all, say users, the service is quick.

"Go to our Web site, www.intranets.com, you'll see a box that says, 'Sign up for a free trial.' They can start creating calendar appointments, they can create a to-do list, or delegate tasks," said Karen Leavitt, vice president of Interactive Marketing.

"I have done some media buys, scheduled some meetings," said Cody.

Intranets.com has been available for the last five years.

A month before the contention, the company put out bumper stickers saying "Seek Alternate Routes," as a way to promote the free service.

The company, which had 8,000 clients before the convention, signed up 40 new clients before the four-day event.

The free service is available through August.
