BOSTON -- Big changes could be down the road at Massachusetts toll plazas if a new proposal is adopted. In an effort to relieve bottlenecks at state toll plazas, Gov. Deval Patrick is mulling a plan to get motorists through the tolls at full speed, the Boston Herald reported. An electronic tolling system created by Raytheon is reportedly under review by the governor's office, and high-level administration officials met with company officials to discuss it in late January. The open-road system would allow motorists to cruise under two overpasses equipped to pick up transponders or snap photos of license plates, the Herald reported. The aim of the high-speed, drive-through system would be to reduce backups and cut costly toll-taker salaries. Similar systems have already been installed by Raytheon in Austin, Texas and on the Florida Turnpike.
