Boston Mayor Tom Menino is expected to outline city budget cuts Wednesday that may call for hundreds of layoffs of city workers.

NewsCenter 5's Gail Huff reported that cuts would be made across the board among police, teachers and librarians.

The budget will be released to the City Council and 212 teachers and teachers aides are expected to be cut, along with 67 police officers, some of the mounted units and park rangers, 44 cadets, 39 community center workers and 26 library employees.

Menino warned that there would be cuts a month ago, even city unions agreed to wage freeze proposals to save money and jobs.

"Even with unions agreeing, there will be some layoffs in city government," Menino said.

He said if unions didn't agree, about 700 workers would be laid off. As it turns out, it would be 565 workers laid off according to the new budget. That involves half the city's unions that agreed to the freezes. The city's two largest unions -- police and teachers --did not agree to wage freezes. They are still hoping some positions can be saved with the influx of additional state and federal aid.
