BOSTON -- Just about every type of business is finding it tough in this economy, even the companies that are trying to help people find jobs.NewsCenter 5's Liz Brunner looked into how the economic downturn is affecting temp agencies.
Fidelity Cutting 1,300 JobsSince 1971, Bob Dorne has owned his own company -- R.A.D. Employment Services -- and has gone through seven recessions. But this time he believes companies are struggling more than ever."Given the major shocks of late September or October, I just think they're in total trauma at the moment. They're not sure what to do, and where to go and who to hire and who to let go," he said."If somebody in the desk next to you is suddenly not there anymore, you may be asked to pick up the slack before your company calls and brings in a temp to do it," Gary Carlow, of Preferred Temp, said. That means business is off."Maybe 25 percent to 30 percent, which isn't bad compared to most businesses right now," Carlow said.Another temp agency that didn't want to go on camera said hirings are off by as much as 35 percent."The first thing to do would be to send us an e-mail copy of your resume," Carlow said.Carlow says he gets about 50 to 100 resumes a day, many of them overqualified for the jobs available."I have people available to me with master's and doctorate degrees that are looking for administrative office work because they need something," he said. "I could send you somebody with a Ph.D. to answer your phones for $10 an hour. I mean, that's how the pool has grown."
