Cat food sold in Massachusetts and the other New England states is part of a widespread voluntary recall, the manufacturer said.

Mars Petcare said the recall affects a limited number of Special Kitty Gourmet Blend Dry Cat Food.

The recall follows a positive test result showing potential Salmonella contamination in the food, which was sold at Wal-Mart locations in Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, Vermont, and West Virginia.

The company said the product should not be sold or fed to pets and can be returned for a full refund with the empty bag taken to the store where it was purchased for a full refund.
