BILLERICA, Mass. -- Car enthusiasts in Billerica celebrated the opening of a hydrogen refueling station in that town on Monday.
Hydrogen Cars On ParadeNewsCenter 5's Jim Boyd reported that the opening is part of a national campaign promoting hydrogen as a gasoline alternative.Nine different cars of different sizes, different makes and different models rolled into Billerica on Monday with one thing in common: they all were running on hydrogen."A very clean fuel. When used in a fuel cell, there is no emission of any pollutant and is only water vapor coming out of the pipe," said Roberto Cordaro, of Nuvera Fuel Cells. The cars were in Billerica signaling the opening of the first hydrogen refueling station in Massachusetts. It's part of a coast-to-coast hydrogen road tour, aiming to stop at 33 sites in 19 states, promoting hydrogen as an alternative to gasoline."It is a fuel cell vehicle, takes the hydrogen from the fuel storage tank and oxygen from the air, actually creates electricity as we drive. And so it's a pure electric vehicle but you refuel it with hydrogen rather than plugging it in," said Catherine Dunwoody, of California Fuel Cell Partnerships. The cars are still in the experimental stage, but should be available to consumers by 2010 to 2015, Cheryl McQueary, of the U.S. Department of Transportation, said."So let's say you have a car that is running today at typically 35 miles per gallon, which is a pretty good car by market standard today -- the same car on fuel cell will do 70," Cordaro said.A few hundred people endured Monday's rain to watch the hydrogen car demonstration, many apparently liking what they saw."From what I could see, it's very impressive," said one driver."We certainly have to do something with gasoline. I really think this is the way to go," another driver said.
