Heating Costs: How NewsCenter 5 Crunched The Numbers

  • $430 per month to heat with oil: Massachusetts Division of Energy Resources says the statewide average price of heating oil from October 2007 through April 2008 was $3.23/gallon. The average home uses about 800 gallons during heating season.
  • $266 a month for electric heat: N*Star supplies electricity to 1.1 million customers in Massachusetts. N*Star figures show that the average electricity use between November 2007 and April 2008 was 1478 kwh/month. At approximately 18 cents/kwh, that comes out to $266/month.
  • $206 a month to heat with natural gas: N*Star provides natural gas to 300,000 customers in eastern and central Massachusetts. Average usage between November 2007 and April 2008 was 144 therms per month, which comes out to a bill of approximately $206/month, according to figures provided by N*Star.
