BOSTON -- It's a major mistake by a New England business that could have huge implications: hundreds of e-mails popping up in people's in-boxes that include personal information. A Manchester, N.H., temporary employment agency called Office Team mistakenly e-mailed hundreds of Social Security numbers.NewsCenter 5's Gail Huff reported that the national company has a branch in Cambridge and a spokeswoman said the problem began when a manager was working in the company's database.Christa McManus is one of hundreds of people who had her Social Security number and e-mail address sent out over the Internet Monday. She had registered with the company to find temporary work, but now she has a lot of concerns."With identity theft, with credit cards being used, with people opening up credit cards using my Social Security number," McManus said. When a company manager sent out an e-mail about job opportunities, she instead sent out the Social Security numbers."She hit a button and it sent out a broadcast e-mail, so it certainly was not intentional on her part," company spokesperson Reesa Staten said.Staten said Office Team is notifying everyone listed in the e-mail and the company will provide credit monitoring service, unlimited access to credit reports and identity theft insurance.McManus, however, is still worried."Instead of it getting to this point, maybe they should have taken preventative measures to begin with instead of waiting for this to happen," she said. The company said it has already installed software that will prevent a similar mistake from ever happening again.
