White Sox Activate Closer Jenks

POSTED: 3:24 pm EDT July 18, 2008

(Sports Network) - The Chicago White Sox activated closer Bobby Jenks from the 15-day disabled list Friday. He had been sidelined with left scapula bursitis.

Jenks has not pitched since June 29 against the crosstown rival Cubs, when he finished off a 5-1 win and a three-game sweep with a scoreless inning of relief. However, the reliever felt soreness near his left scapula the day before and the discomfort did not subside.

The MRI results of his upper back came back negative, but he was nonetheless placed on the DL on July 9, retroactive to June 30.

The 6-foot-3, 275-pound closer has converted 18 of 21 save opportunities this season, with a miniscule 1.95 earned run average and a 2-0 record. In two rehab appearances, Jenks allowed one run in two innings to go with three strikeouts.

Scott Linebrink had been handling the closing duties in Jenks' absence, but he has blown two of three save opportunities.

Chicago already made room for Jenks on Thursday by optioning pitcher D.J. Carrasco to Triple-A Charlotte. In his lone appearance with the club, Carrasco allowed one run in 5 1/3 innings of relief against the Texas Rangers.
