POSTED: 2:24 am EDT July 7, 2008

(Sports Network) - David Murphy went 3-for-6 with a three-run home run to help the Texas Rangers squeak by the Baltimore Orioles, 11-10, in the rubber match of a three-game set. The day four offensive players for the Rangers were named to the All-Star team, the club rattled off 14 hits, including three apiece from Ian Kinsler and Ramon Vazquez. Kevin Millwood (6-4) won his seventh straight start against the Orioles despite being touched for five runs -- three earned -- on nine hits through five innings for Texas, which has won five of its last seven. C.J. Wilson served up two homers in the ninth but still came away with his 21st save. Baltimore's Kevin Millar was 4-for-4 with a double and solo home run, while Nick Markakis hit a three-run homer during a 3-for-5 effort at the plate, extending his hitting streak to a career-high 14 games. Brian Roberts and Melvin Mora also hit home runs in the loss. Radhames Liz (3-1) was pounded for six runs -- four earned -- in just 3 2/3 innings for the Orioles, who have fallen in three of their last four games. Jim Johnson only recorded two outs in relief and gave up four runs.

Final Score: Tampa Bay 9, Kansas City 2

St. Petersburg, FL (Sports Network) - Carlos Pena went 3-for-5 with a double and two runs batted in, as the Tampa Bay Rays extended their winning streak to seven games with a 9-2 win over the Kansas City Royals. James Shields (7-5) allowed two runs on four hits in seven innings to pick up the win, and had eight strikeouts to one walk. Shields has won three straight starts, as Tampa Bay's win streak is the longest of its season. The American League East- leading Rays have twice won six games in a row. Evan Longoria hit a two-run home run, while B.J. Upton finished 2-for-4 with two RBI. Carl Crawford added a pair of hits and an RBI for Tampa Bay, which will go for the four- game sweep of the series on Monday. Luke Hochevar (5-7) took the loss after allowing seven runs on nine hits in four frames of work, as the Royals lost their third in a row and fifth of their last six. Esteban German drove in both runs for Kansas City, while Ross Gload had two hits.

Final Score: Chicago 4, Oakland 3

Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Dewayne Wise was 2-for-2 with a double, a run scored and an RBI as the Chicago White Sox used another strong effort from John Danks to earn a split in a four-game series against the Oakland Athletics with a 4-3 win. Danks (6-4) allowed just four hits and two walks to go with a career-high nine strikeouts in a two-run, 6 1/3-inning performance for Chicago. Danks was snubbed from the All-Star team despite surrendering two earned runs or less in 15 of his 18 starts this season. Joe Crede scored and recorded an RBI on the day he was named to his first All-Star team, as the White Sox finished off their 10-game homestand at 8-2. Rich Harden (5-1) was saddled with his first loss of the season after giving up three runs -- two earned -- in his five-inning start. The Oakland ace was credited with five hits, four walks and four strikeouts. Rob Bowen had a two-run double for the A's, who have dropped four of six.

Final Score: Minnesota 4, Cleveland 3

Minneapolis, MN (Sports Network) - Carlos Gomez knocked in the go-ahead run as part of a three-run seventh inning as the Minnesota Twins came back to edge the Cleveland Indians, 4-3, sweeping the three-game set at the Metrodome. Nick Punto had an RBI single and Brendan Harris added a single and scored the winning run for the Twins, who have won five straight and 16 of their last 18 games. Glen Perkins (5-2) picked up the win, tossing seven solid innings. He allowed three runs on seven hits, while striking out three and walking a batter. Joe Nathan, who was selected to play in the 79th All-Star Game on July 15th at Yankee Stadium, picked up his 25th save of the season. Jhonny Peralta hit a two-run homer for Cleveland, which has dropped eight straight and 11 of 13. Cliff Lee (11-2) suffered the loss. The crafty left- hander, who will represent the Indians in the All-Star Game, surrendered four runs on six hits over seven frames.

Final Score: LA Angels of Anaheim 7, Toronto 1

Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Jon Garland allowed one run in a complete game, and Jeff Mathis went 2-for-4 with three runs batted in, as the Los Angeles Angels topped Toronto, 7-1, in the rubber match of a three-game series with the Blue Jays. Garland (8-5) gave up six hits and no walks in his nine- inning effort, and struck out three while throwing just 98 pitches. It was Garland's 100th career win, ninth career complete game and first complete game this season. Garret Anderson finished 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI, while Juan Rivera hit a solo homer for the Angels, who have won four of five, and finished up their six-game homestand with a 4-2 mark. Jesse Litsch (8-5) took the loss after allowing six runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 frames for Toronto, which has lost four of five. Litsch has lost four of his last five decisions. Rod Barajas homered for the Blue Jays, who wrapped up their six-game road trip 2-4 and have lost 13 of their past 17 road games.

Final Score: Detroit 2, Seattle 1 (15 innings)

Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Marcus Thames' sacrifice fly off catcher- turned-pitcher Jamie Burke provided the winning margin as the Detroit Tigers won a 15-inning pitcher's duel over the Seattle Mariners, 2-1, to salvage a split in a four-game series at Safeco Field. Five Seattle relievers combined on nine scoreless innings and kept the game tied into the 15th, but the M's relief corps was exhausted and Burke -- who entered the game as a catcher in the ninth inning -- was forced to come on in relief. He allowed a leadoff double to Miguel Cabrera, and pinch-runner Mike Hollimon advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring when Thames lofted a fly ball to left. But, Burke settled down to keep the deficit at 2-1. Todd Jones worked a scoreless bottom half to finish off the marathon and notch his 16th save. Ryan Raburn homered for the Tigers, who snapped a two-game losing streak. Ivan Rodriguez had four of Detroit's eight hits, while Carlos Guillen -- the Tigers lone All-Star selection -- went 0-for-6. Aquilino Lopez (3-1) tossed a scoreless inning to earn the win in relief of Nate Robertson, who didn't factor in the decision despite a brilliant nine-inning performance, allowing a run on just four hits. Yuniesky Betancourt's RBI double provided the scoring for the Mariners, who lost for just the third time in their last 10 games. Seattle's only All-Star, Ichiro Suzuki, went 1-for-6 with a walk. Burke (0-1) took the loss after reliever Cesar Jimenez got the M's into the 15th with four hitless innings, backing up Ryan Rowland-Smith, who held Detroit to a run on five hits in his five-inning start.

Final Score: New York 5, Boston 4 (10 innings)

Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - Brett Gardner's two-out single in the bottom of the 10th inning lifted New York to a 5-4 win over the Boston Red Sox as the AL East rivals concluded a four-game set from Yankee Stadium. Robinson Cano singled off Boston closer Jonathan Papelbon to open the 10th, then Melky Cabrera laid down a sacrifice bunt. After pinch-hitter Wilson Betemit went down on strikes, Gardner hit a slow roller up the middle that went off shortstop Alex Cora's glove, allowing Cano to score the winning run. Gardner finished 2-for-5 and scored a run for New York, which improved to 2-2 in extra-inning games this season. Cano added a two-run triple for the Yankees, who split the four-game set against the Red Sox. Alex Rodriguez clubbed his 18th home run of the season -- a solo blast -- and 536th of his stellar career, tying Yankees great Mickey Mantle for 13th place on the all- time list. Joba Chamberlain, making his seventh major league start since joining the Yankees rotation on June 3 and first against the Red Sox, went six innings and allowed three runs on four hits in a no-decision. The young fireballer also struck out five and walked four. Mariano Rivera (3-3) tossed two scoreless frames to earn the victory. Kevin Youkilis and Sean Casey each had two hits and scored a run for Boston, which wrapped up a 10-game road trip with a mark of 3-7. Dustin Pedroia singled in a pair of runs to extend his hitting streak to 14 games. Boston starter Tim Wakefield gave up three runs on four hits and struck out five over 6 1/3 innings of a no- decision. Papelbon (3-3) was saddled with the loss after he surrendered his third walk-off hit this season and fifth of his career.
