Puppy Deaths Lead To Quarantine

Dog Owners Pay Thousands In Medical Bills

A local pet resort that puts puppies up for adoption is under a two-week quarantine after dogs that went home with new owners died a short time later.

NewsCenter 5's Sean Kelly reported that the owner of the adoption group where the puppies came from said that they have not been receiving or releasing any dogs for more than a week, and they're no longer concerned about any more dogs being affected.

Portions of Holliston Meadows Pet Resort are under a self-imposed quarantine after as many as 10 puppies adopted from the facility died from parvo.

The deadly dog virus killed Crystal Serret's lab mix Tiny. She adopted what she said appeared to be a perfectly healthy pup.

"The following Thursday he started throwing up," she said.

The symptoms got much worse. Serret took Tiny to a veterinarian and ran up a $1,500 bill before the dog had to be put to sleep.

NewsCenter 5 spoke to another Holliston Meadows adopted dog owner who spent $6,600 before her puppy died from parvo.

An insurance policy allows them to receive a mere $500, and state law offers no further protection.

"If you buy a dog that's sick, the regulations give you the ability to return that dog and get your money back or that you return the dog and get a different dog. If you choose to keep the dog that you've got, the rest of the responsibility is yours," said Kent Large, of the Department of Agricultural Resources.

The owner of the pet resort said that the puppies were rescued in Kentucky and that they showed no sign of the illness when they were adopted.
