Bright One Shines In West Virginia Derby

POSTED: 6:06 pm EDT August 6, 2006

(Sports Network) - Even-money favorite Bright One led every step of the way to win Sunday's $750,000 West Virginia Derby at Mountaineer Race Track.

Ridden by Mark Guidry, Bright One covered the 1 1/8 miles in 1:50.08 on a fast track. The victory gave Guidry his second straight win in the West Virginia Derby. He was aboard last year's winner Real Dandy.

Bright One set the pace with morning line favorite Wanna Runner in a stalking position. Around the turn for home, Ah Day moved to the leader's shoulder.

Bright One accelerated at the top of the stretch and drew off to win by five lengths. Long-shot Cielo Gold was second followed by More Than Regal, Ah Day, Luxembourg, Wanna Runner, Circle the World, Regent Spirit, High Blues and Crocodile Tears.

The original field of 12 was reduce to 10 when the entry of Flashy Bull and High Finance was scratched from the race.

Bright One is a lightly raced colt who was making his fourth career start. Trained by Dale Romans, Bright One has won three straight since a second place in his first race. Sunday's victory was worth $450,000 to bring Bright One's bankroll to $535,554.

Bright One is owned by Carolyn Sue Bruder and Delmar Daubs and has been the favorite in all four starts. He prepped for the West Virginia Derby by winning the Forestry Stakes at Churchill Downs.

Bright One returned $4.00, $3.40 and $3.20. Cielo Gold paid $13.20 and $6.00, and More Than Regal paid $4.60 for show.
