Field Of 12 Entered In West Virginia Derby

POSTED: 4:01 pm EDT August 3, 2006

(Sports Network) - A full field of 12 three-year-olds has been entered for Sunday's $750,000 West Virginia Derby at Mountaineer Race Track. This will be the 37th running of the 1 1/8 mile event.

Lone Star Derby winner Wanna Runner is the 3-1 morning line favorite. He will be ridden by Mike Smith and start from post 7. Wanna Runner is owned by Mike Pegram and trained by Bob Baffert.

Wanna Runner is a chestnut gelding who has won over $500,000 in 2006 and has career earnings of $567,306. Earlier this year he captured the WinStar Derby, but in one start since, the Canadian-bred tired badly to finish 10th as the favorite in the Queen's Plate at Woodbine on June 25.

Lightly raced Bright One is the 4-1 second pick in the morning line. He will start from the inside post in the 12 horse field with Mark Guidry coming in to ride. Guidry was aboard Bright One last month at Churchill Downs to win the Forestry Stakes by 7 1/4 lengths.

Dale Romans trains the chestnut colt for Carolyn Sue Bruder and Delmar Daubs. Bright One has two wins in three career starts for $85,554.

The entry of Flashy Bull and High Finance are 6-1 in the program. Both are owned by West Point Thoroughbreds with Flashy Bull trained by Kiaran McLaughlin and High Finance conditioned by Richard Violette.

Flashy Bull will be ridden by Jose Santos from post 2 and Dana Whitney will be aboard High Finance in the 9 hole.

Rounding out the field for the West Virginia Derby are: Circle the World, Regent Spirit, Ah Day, Cielo Gold, High Blues, Crocodile Tears, Luxembourg and More Than Regal.

The West Virginia Derby will be broadcast on ESPN with a post-time of 5:27 p.m. (et).
