Elmont, NY -- (Sports Network) - The country's top two female thoroughbreds, Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta, each took to the track Saturday on opposite ends of the United States, minutes apart.First up was Rachel Alexandra in the $300,000 Mother Goose Stakes at Belmont Park. The three-year-old filly faced just two other fillies due to a pair of scratches. Don't Forget Gil was scratched with an elevated temperature and Hopeful Image had not recuperated sufficiently from a mild case of colic she suffered Wednesday night. With Calvin Borel in the saddle, the 1-20 favorite broke from the inside post a bit slowly and allowed Malibu Prayer and Flashing to duel for the lead up the backstretch. Malibu Prayer had the lead heading into the far turn as Rachel Alexandra began her move on the outside. The favorite took the lead coming off the final turn and quickly extended her lead. Without using his whip Borel had his mount open a double-digit advantage even as the filly was eased coming to the wire. Owned by Jess Jackson and Harold McCormick, the Preakness Stakes winner hit the wire 19 1/4-lengths clear, nearly equaling her 20 1/4-length margin in the Kentucky Oaks. Malibu Prayer held on for second with Flashing finishing third. The time for the 1 1/8 miles was a stakes record 1:46.33. "She's a racehorse, this is a racehorse," Borel said. "Believe me, she's not normal, I'm telling you, she's unbelievable. I nudged (her) on the turn for home around the quarter pole but that was it. To make sure she'd get something out of it and do something for me. She is, I don't know, like a Secretariat or a Seattle Slew. I've never been on one like that in my life." Rachel Alexandra paid $2.10 while notching her seventh straight win with the Mother Goose victory and adds $180,000 to her bankroll. Trained by Steve Asmussen, the filly has won nine of 12 lifetime starts with $1,798,354. "She is a great pleasure to be around," Asmussen said. "She's very endearing in the way she looks and acts. I can't say enough about Calvin Borel's ride. They took it right to her with 44 and change and all the pressure in the world. He just let them go about their business and did what's best for her and he needs to keep doing that. A few minutes later in the $300,000 Vanity Stakes at Hollywood Park, Zenyatta came from off the pace to win the race for the second consecutive year. Last year's champion older female was sent off as the 3-10 favorite in the six horse field. Setting the pace in the 1 1/8 mile Vanity was Briecat followed by Allicansayis Wow, Dawn After Dawn and Hot n' Dusty. Jockey Mike Smith had Zenyatta racing in fifth some five-lengths off the lead. Zenyatta began her move to the front on the far turn and was third behind Dawn After Dawn and Briecat. The three were across the track at the top of the stretch with the favorite on the outside. It was not until the final hundred yards that Zenyatta took the lead and went on to post a 2 1/2-length victory. Finishing second was Briecat followed by Dawn After Dawn, Hot n' Dusty, Allicansayis Wow and Modification. Zenyatta stopped the timer at 1:48.15 on Hollywood Park's all-weather track. Scratched from the race were Forest Melody and You Lift Me Up. "She is just amazing," said trainer John Sherriffs. "It's wonderful that other people appreciate this. "I have a lot of confidence in Mike Smith." Owned by Jerry and Ann Moss, Zenyatta remains undefeated in 11 lifetime starts and now has earnings of more than $2.4 million. The Vanity, in which she carried 129 pounds, was Zenyatta's second start of the year. She carried 126 pounds in her 2009 debut with a repeat victory in the Milady Handicap last month. "It's just amazing," Smith said. "I'm so blessed to be part of the Mosses and Shirreffs and along comes a horse sent from God. She's just incredible. It was a short field and she had a lot of weight on her and I didn't want her to have so much to do, so I stayed a little closer than normal. But when I asked her she lengthened her stride and it was pretty much over then." Zenyatta returned $2.60 and $2.10, and Briecat paid $5.80 for place. There was no show betting.
