Somebeachsomewhere Named 2008 Horse Of The Year
Las Vegas, NV (Sports Network) - Three-year-old Champion Pacer Somebeachsomewhere has been voted Harness Racing's Horse of the Year for 2008. The Dan Patch awards for excellence were presented to owners of the sport's brightest stars on Wednesday at the Bellagio Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.Somebeachsomewhere, trained by Brent MacGrath for Schooner Stables, won 14 of 15 starts last year for a record $2,448,003. With Paul MacDonnell driving, Somebeachsomewhere won the Messenger Stakes and closed his career with a victory in the Breeders Crown. Now retired, the colt was also voted 2008 Pacer of the Year. He received 121 of the 158 votes cast for Horse of the Year. Finishing second to Somebeachsomewhere was Champion three-year-old Trotter Deweycheatumnhowe who garnered 35 votes. Receiving one vote apiece was Champion Older Male Pacer Mister Big and Honorable Daughter, the Champion Two- Year-Old Filly Trotter. Deweycheatumnhowe finished second for the second straight year in the Horse of the Year balloting. He did receive recognition as 2008 Trotter of the Year. Driven by trainer Ray Schnittker, the colt won the Hambletonian and the Kentucky Futurity and finished 2008 with earnings of $2,218,987 while winning 12 of 15 starts.
