Tetrick Voted Top Driver By Writers Association

Harrisburg, PA -- (Sports Network) - Tim Tetrick, on the mend following hip surgery, has been voted 2008 Driver of the Year by the United States Harness Writers Association. The 27-year-old Tetrick was also named top driver in 2007.Tetrick underwent hip replacement surgery earlier this week at Philadelphia's Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. He suffered from a degenerative hip condition since childhood which required his right hip to be replaced. After setting new single season records for wins and earnings last year, Tetrick concluded his 2008 year with 902 victories and better than $19.7 million, a new earnings mark. In 2007 he had 1,189 wins and more than $18.3 million. Tetrick will be sidelined through the early part of next year. Also recognized by the USHWA as the Owner of the Year is Jerry Silva, who co- owns 2008 Hambletonian winner Deweycheatumnhowe. This honor comes one day after the colt's driver and conditioner Ray Schnittker was named Trainer of the Year. Along with the Hambletonian win, Deweycheatumnhowe won the Kentucky Futurity, giving the colt two of the three Triple Crown races. The three-year-old trotter had an overall record in 2008 of 12 wins in 15 starts for more than $2.2 million. Tetrick and Silva will receive the honors as part of the Night of Stars awards banquet on Wednesday, February 4, at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas.
