Kids' Creations Always Appreciated On Mother's Day

In this age of commercialism, kids might feel pressured to buy a Mother's Day gift. But there are options aside from blowing their allowance -- or asking Dad for cash.

Many moms are just as happy -- if not more so -- with gifts that kids create.

Homemade Card

It's an oldie, but a goodie. Look no farther than a piece of construction paper and markers. If you really want to be fancy, set up the kids with glitter, ribbons or other "pretties." Mom will treasure homemade cards for years to come.

If your kids are computer-savvy, they might prefer making a computerized card instead. Most operating systems come with some type of "paint" program. Let the child use his or her creative energy at the computer, then print out the card on a color printer. Mom will love it.

Along the same lines, older kids can write poems or stories for Mom.

Flower Pot

If Mom likes flowers, make a special pot for her. On a purchased terracotta pot, use oil pastels and let the child decorate the pot.

Oil pastels are permanant and easy to use because they are just like using crayons (but supervise for young kids, because they won't wash off clothes or furniture well). Or you can also use acrylic paint.

Then, buy a plant, transplant it into your fancy pot, and give it to Mom with her breakfast-in-bed tray.

Personalized Shirt

Another idea that Mom will like is a personalized T-shirt or tote bag.

You can purchase a plain T-shirt (or sweatshirt) or canvas tote bags at a craft store. Using fabric-suitable paints, have each child put their hands in the paint, then on the fabric surface of your choice. Make each child's print in a different color. Write the child's name by the hand print, and let it dry thoroughly. Mom will love it!

Magnets

Children can create designs on heavy paper, such as card stock, and attach a piece of magnetic tape to the back. Make sure to pull off the tape's backing! If you want to do something fancier, there are magnet kits you can buy to help.

IOUs

Make it easy for Mom to get the kids' help around the house for a while. Help children come up with ideas for IOUs -- one coupon for clearing the table, one for putting away clothes, etc. Let the kids be creative with the ideas and the designs.
