Stay Safe This Holiday Season

UPDATED: 11:53 am EST December 7, 2006

The holiday season is upon us, and with it come special food, gifts and family time.

But the nature of the season -- with the trees, decorations, car trips -- also increases the possibilities for accidents, both in the home and on the road.

Each year, hospital emergency rooms treat about 8,700 people for injuries, such as falls, cuts and shocks, related to holiday lights, decorations and Christmas trees, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

In addition, Christmas trees are involved in about 400 fires annually, resulting in 20 deaths, 70 injuries and an average of more than $15 million in property loss and damage.

CPSC conducts surveillance of holiday lights and decorations at stores nationwide, and last year has prevented the import of 320,398 units of holiday lights that did not meet safety standards.

The CPSC advises keeping matches, lighters and candles away from children and never leaving burning candles unattended.

We've compiled some other tips to help you enjoy a safe, happy and healthy holiday season with your family.
