A Gift That May Be Difficult to Unwrap
ADD is not related to intelligence. Many intelligent people with ADD thrive and succeed by capitalizing on their strengths. We facilitate this process. The Hallowell Center's purpose is to improve lives by helping people unwrap the gifts they already have.
Hallowell Center doctors treat people with ADD every day. Because we think about the strengths and challenges associated with this unique, complex diagnosis on a daily basis, our depth of understanding is greater. We realize that people with ADD do not fit neatly into diagnostic categories, and are not described by criteria listed in a manual. While one person might lose track of time and be chronically late, another might be aware of time down to the minute. Some people are completely disorganized, while others are compulsively orderly. Some are unable to focus for more than a few minutes, while others can be hyper-focused on a task for hours. The tie which binds these traits together is a lack of balance, an all or nothing quality to focus and attention.
Untreated ADD can result in inconsistent performance. For example, a child might do very well in classes or on assignments he finds interesting, but be unable to even pick up the homework for a class which bores him. An attorney can be immersed in her work at the expense of her family and friends. A busy parent with multiple tasks upon which to focus may move from one thing to another without finishing anything.
Concern about academic performance is often the primary reason children and their families come to the Hallowell Center. Many adults come to see us because they are frustrated by the difference between their capabilities and their productivity. People of all ages with ADD find it difficult to stay "in the moment." Their thoughts seem to always be several steps ahead, back or sideways, rather than in the present. As a result, they seem not to listen when spoken to. They forget what they are supposed to do. They are unable to decide what is most important to do first, second and third. They feel mentally and physically restless, and often get bored easily.
The Hallowell Center's comprehensive approach to evaluation enables us to identify and emphasize your strengths. Our medical and alternative therapies will help you to exercise the areas in which you are not as strong. We are confident you will find this strengths-based strategy interesting, empowering, and effective.
