Stores Begin To Carry Spinach Again

POSTED: 1:38 pm EDT September 27, 2006

While the investigation into an E. coli outbreak continues, bags of spinach are making a comeback at some supermarkets. Meanwhile, people are talking about lawsuits related to the scare.

Maryland-based Giant Food will be carrying it. The supermarkets will have signs telling customers where the spinach comes from.

Wegmans, with stores in five northeastern states, will also be carrying spinach.

Both chains said they're getting spinach from Canada and Colorado. It's not from California, where the E. coli problem is believed to have started.

The outbreak has been traced to fresh spinach from three counties in California. The outbreak sickened at least 183 people in 26 states and killed one woman in Wisconsin.

Whole Foods, a chain that specializes in organic products, expects to have spinach next week. Safeway is also working to get spinach back on store shelves.

The Food Lion grocery chain said it's waiting for further verification from suppliers before it resumes sales.

Lawsuits Planned

As health officials focus on a company they believe packed the E. coli-tainted spinach, An Ohio family is filing a lawsuit against the firm that is believed to have packed the tainted greens.

The couple and their three kids allegedly ate the spinach and got sick. According to their lawyer, the youngest child, a 1-year-old girl, suffered permanent kidney damage and needs lifetime care.

The family is suing Natural Selection Foods for at least $100,000 in damages. That company has recalled spinach sold under some 30 names, including Dole and Ready Pac.

A request for comment from the company wasn't immediately returned.
