Not All Babies Should Cry Selves To Sleep, Doc Says

Ferber Says Technique Not For Babies With Night Terrors

A renowned doctor who has influenced millions of parents on the best way to get their baby to sleep is now softening his approach.

In 1985, pediatrician Richard Ferber wrote the best-selling, though controversial book titled Solve Your Child's Sleep Problems.

In that book, he urged parents to let their babies cry themselves to sleep.

But Ferber now says his method was never meant to be applied to all babies.

The technique, he said, is meant for children who can't fall asleep without being rocked -- not those with night terrors.

"The first need of that youngster is to feel confident at night, and if that means a parent with them all night, then that's the way it should be. The sleep problem can be solved as a secondary issue," Ferber said.

The key, Ferber now emphasizes, is finding the approach that works best for your family.
