Hidden Salt Can Add Up

Many people look to herbs and a variety of seasonings when trying to cut back on salt. But beware: Some seasonings may contain hidden salt.

Reading labels, using salt sparingly when cooking and limiting processed foods are good ways to keep sodium levels in control. And when choosing seasonings, read the fine print on the labels for sodium, salt or MSG.

Common seasonings that don't sound salty -- but are -- include:
  • Lemon pepper

  • Fajita seasoning

  • Thai seasoning

  • Herb chicken seasoning

  • Meat tenderizer

Look for salt-free versions of seasoning mixes or try mixing different herbs together to achieve the variety of flavor that premixed seasonings provide.
