DRUG STATS
Prilosec, clinically known as Omeprazole, is a delayed-release 20mg tablet to be taken for 14 days.
First FDA approved proton-pump inhibitor (PPI) to be available over-the-counter for the treatment of frequent heartburn occurring 2 or more days a week.
Recommended dose: 20mg taken once daily.
Side effects: headache, diarrhea, constipation, upset stomach, vomiting, stomach pain, cough, cold symptoms, dizziness and rash.
Prices: $0.23-$0.75 per tablet.
HOW IT WORKS:
Prilosec shuts down stomach acid-production at the source by working directly on active acid pumps to significantly inhibit production.
Heartburn and gastro esophageal reflux disorder (GERD) symptoms occur when the valve between the stomach and esophagus leaks and stomach acids and digestive back into the esophagus from the stomach, causing a burning sensation in the chest or throat.
Over 60 million Americans experience heartburn at least once a month, while 15 million Americans experience heartburn daily.
Frequent occurrences can lead to damage or irritation of the esophagus lining.
HEARTBURN TRIGGERS:
Foods to avoid: Spices, onions, coffee, citrus, tomato, chocolate, almonds.
Tips: Don't lie down within 3 hours of eating. Digestive fluid and acids can flow into the esophagus. Keep food diary to record what foods trigger your heartburn.
