Want Younger Looking Hands?

Patients Turn To Hand Rejuvenation Treatments

More and more Americans are facing up to their wrinkles and either injecting, zapping or peeling them away. But the face isn't the only part of the body that can be rejuvenated.

NewsCenter 5's Liz Brunner reported that more people than ever are trying to turn back the hands of time.

They're yours to have and to hold. They can forge history and create beautiful music. But when they age, hands can put a wrinkle in things.

"They're the tell tale sign that somebody is older than their face may look," Skin Care Physicians Dr. Jeffrey Dover said.

There's a new era called hand rejuvenation.

At the American Society for Asthetic and Plastic Surgery in Boston there were a number of creams and lotions that claim to lend a hand to anti-aging -- including Hanna Isul's Minute Lift.

Unfortunately, for the cost of between $40 and $100 a month, the results are short-lived.

"They're all temporary fixes as far as I can tell. There's not a cream out there that does anything permanent," ASAPA Dr. Laurie Casas said.

A more permanent fix is a stronger chemical peel, administered by a doctor.

"It will help rejuvenate the skin by removing that top layer that is damaged and replacing it with newer, healthy skin," Boston University Cosmetic Surgery Center Dr. Dany Touma said.

The peel does peel away wrinkles, and the effect can last for a few years. But it costs about $800.

Some doctors opt for performing a fat transfer -- where fat from a patient's thigh is moved to their hands.

"We suction the fat out, it comes out very easily, and inject it under the skin of the hand. In general about 30 percent of what is injected stays there and stays there permanently," Touma said.

The procedure costs about $2,500.

Laser surgery was the solution for Ora Dunbar, who didn't like what she spotted on her hands.

"They were covered with sunspots and freckles from years of sitting in the sun, as a teenager and being very fair skinned," Dunbar said.

Three 15-minute sessions, and about $1,800 does the trick.

"They will darken for about a week. The darkness will fade and the spots will fade with the darkness," Dover said. You can also help keep your hands young by doing some simple things -- using gloves when you wash dishes or garden, using moisturizers at night, and always wearing sunscreen, especially while driving the car, experts said.
