BOSTON -- It's been nearly two years since "Good Morning America's" Robin Roberts announced she had breast cancer.NewsCenter 5's Kelley Tuthill reported Wednesday that a charitable foundation has made a six-figure donation to Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Robert's name to fund critical research."When I heard about that I was literally moved to tears," Roberts said.Roberts has shared much of her breast cancer journey with viewers. But what most people don't know is that she has triple negative breast cancer -- an aggressive type that tends to strike young, African-American women."I am triple negative. There's nothing more that can be done for me right now," she said. "When there are other types of breast cancer, there is additional treatment. There are other things that can be done to lessen the chances it will return. Unfortunately, in my case that isn't the case."Roberts is one of 30,000 women a year who get diagnosed with this type of cancer. She said that she was so excited to hear the V Foundation is donating $600,000 to study treatments for this disease at Dana Farber Cancer Institute."The research part is to ask: Do the drugs work? And to understand why, so that which women's tumors will respond this way and which women should get totally different treatment," said Dr. Judy Garber, of Dana Farber Cancer Institute. The V Foundation is named after the late Jim Valvano, who was a legendary basketball coach and ESPN broadcaster. Roberts also worked at ESPN and was a standout college hoops player."My hope for this research is plain and simple. Please find a cure. Please. And I'm going to stick around long enough to see that happen," she said.
