This past weekend, Glenn Ordway of Sports Radio 850 WEEI and his wife, Sarah, celebrated their daughter Mia Grace Ordway’s 1st birthday at Davio’s in Boston. The Ordway’s privately announced the kick-off of The Miracle Mia Foundation in honor of their daughter who was born at Brigham and Women’s Hospital on Feb. 28, 2008. In an intimate setting at Brigham and Women’s, the Ordways donated one of Cincinnati Sub-Zero’s cooling units to the hospital’s NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit).

Due to complications during delivery, Mia suffered from Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE), which, in lay terms, is a lack of oxygen to the brain. The condition often leads to severe brain damage, cerebral palsy and delayed development. Luckily, Dr. Robert Insoft, Medical Director of BWH’s NICU, was on duty that night. Dr. Insoft called upon neighboring Children’s Hospital Boston, the first New England Hospital to have Cincinnati Sub-Zero’s “cooling unit,” used to induce therapeutic hypothermia. Therapeutic Hypothermia cools the body and can prevent and minimize brain damage. In Mia’s case allowing her newborn brain to repair the damage.

The mission of The Miracle Mia Foundation is two-fold:

The foundation will work with Cincinnati Sub-Zero Products, Inc. (www.cszinc.com), to ensure that every hospital has these temperature management solutions that are used for infants, cardiac arrest, spinal cord injuries (former Buffalo Bills player, Kevin Everett), and stroke victims.

The foundation will also work with David Acker, BWH’s Chief of Obstetrics, to support a multidisciplinary lectureship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital that continues to advance the safest patient and family-oriented care in Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Nursing and Anesthesiology. Topics to be addressed include communication, teamwork, and safety simulations.

Donations to The Miracle Mia Foundation can be sent to:
