Boston Medical Center announced Wednesday that it will be cutting staff and services to deal with a reduction in state aid.

The hospital said Wednesday that 250 people from various departments will either lose their jobs or have their hours reduced as part of an effort to save the center about $114 million.

The cuts come after the state announced it was reducing Medicaid and health care funds for medical centers.

According to BMC, state budget cuts mean $84 million less in state supplemental payments and a $30 million reduction in Medicaid rates. The hospital said state government would pay just 64 cents of every dollar it costs to give care to low income patients.

"More than 50 percent of BMC's patients are low-income -- and they are the people who are hurt most by any reduction in access or services," BMC President Elaine Ullian said.

BMC will no longer support Quincy Medical Center as of June.

BMC officials said they trying to secure alternate funding through the state to keep programs in tact. Hospital officials said the center may make more cuts.
