BOSTON -- A local mother and wife was featured on "Oprah" Wednesday for her amazing strength and courage. A flesh-eating bacteria took her arms and legs.News Center 5's Liz Brunner reported Wednesday on her incredible story."I miss just holding my husband's hand. Simple things. Just normal every day things that you take for granted. I miss my independence," said Monica Jorge, of Ayer, Mass.Jorge's independence is what has made her so strong. Last August hours after giving birth to second daughter, Sophia, her health spiraled out of control. A flesh-eating bacteria ravaged her entire body. Her only chance of survival was to have her legs and arms amputated."I didn't have a choice. If I wanted to go home there was no choice. I had a family that was waiting," she said. "I was mad. I was angry. I had a few arguments with God. 'You just gave me a beautiful baby. I'm engaged to a wonderful man. I have an older daughter. And you just took all four of my limbs? Why?'" she said. Her anger fueled her determination to face those challenges that most of us would consider impossible. She has endured 37 surgeries and aggressive therapy at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital with her prosthetic limbs. With no abdominal muscles for support, she has struggled to walk. Through it all, her fiance, Tony, stood by her."He could have walked away at any time. He didn't sign on for this," said Jorge. She said that none of that mattered when they said their vows to each other at Massachusetts General Hospital."Not exactly the wedding you had planned or envisioned?" Brunner asked."I can't picture a better wedding," she said. "He's the most wonderful man, I think, out there."Her husband was there as Oprah recognized Jorge for her spirit and courage, calling her a true "warrior mom" on Wednesday's show."What does it make you feel like to be put into that category?" Brunner asked."When they picked me I wondered why. It just seems second nature. I'm a Mom," Jorge said."Where do you get your strong spirit?" Brunner asked."My girls. My husband. My loving family -- to know that they're still there. And that's my driving force. I was given a second chance," she said.
