Sex Dysfunction? Women May Need Viagra

Sildenafil Aids Women On Antidepressants

POSTED: 3:13 pm EDT July 22, 2008

Viagra may help women who experience sexual dysfunction while taking antidepressants, according to a report from JAMA.

The journal said that sexual problems are a major influence in people stopping treatment with serotonin reuptake inhibitors, which make up 90 percent of the antidepressant prescriptions in the U.S.

In tests over four years, 49 women who reported sexual problems while taking the mood lifters were treated with a placebo, and 49 took sildenafil, which is sold as Viagra.

Dr. H. George Nurnberg of the University of New Mexico said women taking Viagra said they had a greater improvement; 73 percent of women on the placebo said they had no improvement. Twenty-eight percent of the women on the drug said that.

He pointed out that women are twice as likely to be diagnosed with depression.
