If you exercise and eat right, but still feel a bit tired, there is something you can do, according to nutrition expert Elizabeth Somer, by eating a few nutrient-rich foods you'll find at every grocery store.

Superfoods For Women?

NewsCenter 5's Heather Unruh reported Wednesday on the five superfoods for women.

Nutritionist Elizabeth Somer took us shopping at Whole Foods for six superfoods; foods she says will help all women shape up and feel better.

"There are a few foods that really do have one-two super-duper punch when it comes to nutrition, Somer said.

Superfood No. 1: berries.

"Blueberries are the ones that have been found to improve memory and brain function. But strawberries are loaded with health-enhancing anti-oxidants that can also reduce risks for disease," she said.

Superfood No. 2: oranges. Somer says they're more than just a great source for vitamin C.

"There's 170 vital chemicals in oranges that have been found to lower your risk of everything from cancer to heart disease to cataracts," Somer said.

Superfood No. 3 comes as a shocker. Somers says women should eat three ounces of lean red meat twice a week.

"There's a lot of cuts saturated with that artery-clogging bad fat. But with that said, if you choose extra extra lean red meat it's one of the best sources of a very absorbable iron. And that's important because iron is the number one nutrient deficiency for women," she said.

From meat to dairy, superfood No. 4: plain low-fat yogurt, without fruit.

"It's loaded with calcium, a mineral that's so important for building bones and lowering your risk of colon cancer. But also the bacteria in that plain non-fat yogurt has been shown to boost immunity," said Somer.

Superfood No. 5: canned tomatoes.

"Tomatoes are probably the diet's best source of lycopene, a phytochemical that's been shown to lower heart disease risks by 50 percent in both men and women. You absorb the lycopene from canned tomato products two and a half times better than you do from fresh tomatoes," she said.

Fresh spices also make the superfood list, coming in at No. 6.

"For instance, oregano has 42 times the antioxidants ounce for ounce that an apple does," she said.
