BOSTON -- A mother battling pancreatic cancer is trying to raise awareness of the disease.
NewsCenter 5's Rhonda Mann reported that Dana Shuhan has fought pancreatic cancer for two years. She was first profiled on NewsCenter 5 last summer, and since then, the mother of three has continued to deal with the disease.
"A lot of my struggle really has centered around trying to be with [my sons] for as long as possible," she said.
This Sunday, on Mother's Day, Shuhan will walk in a fund-raiser for pancreatic cancer research. Her boys will walk alongside her.
Friday, doctors at Massachusetts General Hospital had mixed news for Shuhan. Tests showed the tumor has not grown, but blood tests suggested the cancer may be progressing.
"I take that information in, but because I feel good about myself and I can enjoy myself and be with my children and go to their ballgames, that's what I focus on," Shuhan said.
Shuhan is now on a stronger form of chemotherapy. Her doctors said her upbeat attitude is an inspiration for other patients.
"Dana is somebody who represents the best-case scenario, the possibilities," Dr. David Ryan said. "That maybe you can do OK for a time, and maybe you don't know where you're going to be a year from now, but you know where you're going to be the next month, and really you couldn't do it any better than Dana's done it."
Shuhan said that she hopes her walk Sunday will help find a cure for the disease that threatens to take her away from her family.
"We have a little prayer time at night just before we eat and we give thanks," she said. "And I thank them every day for being my children, because I learn a lot from them, and they are my little blessings."
