New Treatment Helps Reduce Stretch Marks

State-Of-The-Art Laser Rejuvenates The Skin

Rebecca Hoffey loves her 9-year-old twin girls, but hates the stretch marks she was left with after giving birth.

“I've never liked the way they looked,” said Hoffey. “I figured it was permanent and there was nothing I could do.”

Ninety percent of pregnant women get stretch marks, according to doctors.

“There's a loss of some of the supporting structures, the collagen and elastin. Essentially you have a thinning of certain portions of the skin that we see as stretch marks,” said Dr. Min Ahn, a facial plastic surgeon at The Aesthetic Wellness Center in Westborough.

“How do you feel about the results you've had so far?” Ahn asked Hoffey.

Dr. Min Ahn is taking care of Hoffey’s stretch marks with a technique known as the Fraxel Laser. It's been used for years as a skin tightener and is now emerging as a stretch-mark eraser.

“We see a significant improvement in the texture, the tone and the appearance of the skin area that has the stretch marks,” said Ahn.

Before the procedure, the skin is numbed. The laser's tiny beams then punch holes in the skin and zap away the stretch marks.

“We're inducing your body to form knew collagen in these areas to create a sort of younger type of skin,” said Ahn.

Ahn recommends that his patients receive up to five treatments, but he says the results are long-term.

“People are continuing to see improvement in the treatment area even six months or so after the final treatment that they've had,” said Ahn.

Hoffey has only received two treatments so far, but is already thrilled with the results.

“Prior to the treatment you could see crevasses and white marks from the stretch marks. Now they're more even than the rest of the skin. Around my belly button I had wrinkling, and it's much tighter now,” she said.
