BOSTON -- You don't have to look far to find someone suffering from allergies. But some with allergies have found a simple solution that has them saying goodbye to allergy pills, sprays and medications.NewsCenter 5's Heather Unruh reported Wednesday that Kyle Malone, 24, will finish up his masters in music at the end of May and then pursue a career in music. When allergies started some years ago, it was a problem for him."I immediately started a lot of antihistamines and decongestants. But once I stared focusing on singing, it became a real issue, because I was so dried out. I wasn't able to sing well," he said.A roommate suggested he try a neti pot."One day I came home, and he was standing over the sink neti potting, and I was like, 'What in the world are you doing?'" Malone said.Dr. Matthew Kashima, the head of the Department of Otolaryngology and Neck Surgery at Johns Hopkins Bayview, said neti potting is hundreds of years old, and it can be incredibly useful."They're very holistic, very natural and can supplement a lot of medications people need to use," Kashima said.Kashima said the nose is an air filter, catching particulate matter and allergens."For people with allergies, those allergens get filtered out in the nose, and the longer the allergens stay in contact with the nose, the more chance the nose has to create symptoms, in reaction to that," he said. While Kashima doesn't think neti potting is magic for everyone, it is for Malone. He's found relief and a feeling that some say is like eating wasabi."The after effect is like after you've done wasabi, just opened up, really clean. It's a great feeling," Malone said.It has saved him a bundle of time and money for doctor visits and medications. All he needs is salt, warm water and the pot."You don't realize how clogged up you are until after you've done it. You say, 'OK, I can breathe free,'" he said.
