Body detox is one of the hottest health crazes in Hollywood, and a new detox center in Boston is promising to help you flush your body of toxins with a footbath.

NewsCenter 5's Heather Unruh reported Thursday they're in the foods we eat, the air we breathe and the water we drink. But is there a way to purge chemicals from our body?

"The No. 1 things that we are able to get out of the body are lead, mercury, nickel," Boston Dtox owner Dr. Douglas Wine said.

Wine said a high-tech footbath can safely get rid of toxins. He claims you will feel better, it will improve skin and even help you lose weight.

"Your energy levels are going to get better. Your digestion's going to get better. You're going to sleep better," Wine said.

This is how Wine said it works. You soak put your feet in a bucket of warm water that has a special ion generator. The ions supposedly help pull the toxins from the feet.

"When we open up that cell wall, it allows the cells to actually dump their toxins and their wastes, and we're able to suck them out of through the feet," Wine said.

The water changes colors during the treatment.

"If you have problems in your lungs, your gallbladder, your liver you'll start to see black or brown particles," Wine said. "The colors give us an indication of what's going on in there."

After five minutes the water turned white, half way through, it was blue, then after 20, it looked like mud. Client Lisa White said that she believes it works.

"There were no allergy symptoms at all last year," White said.

But there are skeptics. Dr. Cathleen London said the footbath may not hurt you, but it probably won't help.

"You don't excrete things through your feet. Our bodies have a way of eliminating metals and toxins. That is what our liver is a big clearing house for and our kidneys," London said.

Detox is big business. There a number of kits on the market. London said that while some are OK, such as those that include milk thistle, silymarin and dandelion, she warned that many kits contain ingredients that are dangerous.

"When you get to cascara, to senna to aloe -- those are really hard on your body, and they can make it very difficult for your body to eliminate on its own," London said.

London said that a great way to get toxins out of our bodies is by eating a healthy diet and exercising.

One footbath at Boston Dtox costs about $50.
