New Laser Treatment May Prevent BaldnessSome Say Procedure Stimulates Hair GrowthPOSTED: 2:33 pm EST March 2,
2007 BOSTON -- A laser treatment could stop your hair from falling out, and it may even stimulate hair growth.NewsCenter 5's Heather Unruh reported Friday that when Pat Branca noticed her hair falling out after a hysterectomy, she was very devastated."I just felt like I was going bald, and I was too young to go bald," Branca said.Kiel McKivergan was only 20 when his hair started to collect in the shower drain."It was thinning pretty much all over, in the front, in this area," he said. Both went to see hair expert Dr. Robert Leonard, of Leonard Hair Transplant Associates, for help."If a person doesn't do anything about his or her hair loss today, I can promise them they will have less hair next year," Leonard said.Leonard said that a hair loss laser treatment just approved by the FDA could help. Thousands of his patients have used it to stop their hair from falling out and as treatment after hair transplant surgery.Branca and McKivergan have undergone a series of Luce treatments. They sit under the light for 30 minutes. The laser increases blood flow to the hair follicles. The results are impressive."The low-level laser light therapy actually stops progression of male or female pattern baldness in 90 percent of its patients, and it can regrow hair 50 percent of the time," Leonard said. Results are not immediate. It can take up to three months for people to notice less hair falling out and up to eight months before hair grows back. But Branca and McKivergan said that it's worth the wait."I can feel it coming in, and he said if I can wait six months, I can see the results," Branca said."It grew back. It hasn't been falling out anymore. I maintained everything I had," McKivergan said.Patients have to commit to one year of laser therapy, which can cost up to $4,000. It is not covered by insurance. A small percentage of people may need follow-up treatments. Copyright 2007 by TheBostonChannel.com. All rights reserved.
