Students Caught In H1N1 Shot Mixup

47 People Given Seasonal Flu Shot, Not H1N1 Vaccine

Nine students were among the nearly 50 people who received the seasonal flu shot instead of the H1N1 vaccine in Needham last month, according to school officials.

Superintendent Dan Gutekanst said in an e-mail to parents before Thanksgiving that the Eliot School students would receive the correct H1N1 vaccine "as soon as possible," the Needham Times reported.

The nine students were among 47 people who recently received the seasonal flu vaccine instead of the H1N1 vaccine. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned health departments last week about the possible vaccination label confusion.

Needham Fire Chief Paul Buckley said last week that he was notified by the department that the vaccination he originally got, along with a number of his colleagues, was the seasonal flu vaccination, not the H1N1 vaccine.

"Hopefully, we haven't had any issues in the past week where some of the people came in contact with the H1N1 virus or possibly got sick from it believing they were vaccinated when they actually weren't," Buckley said.

The town's health department called everyone to tell them about the mistake. Public health officials said there is no health risk in receiving a second dose of the seasonal flu vaccine.
