Now that warmer weather is here, it's time to pull out those shorts and bathing suits. For people who suffer from unsightly leg veins or spider veins, it's more embarrassing that fun to wear those skin-baring clothes.

NewsCenter 5's Gail Huff talked to some experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute about getting rid of spider veins, once and for all.

"I actually got up one day and I looked in the mirror and did not like what I saw. I thought my legs were really horrible and that point I decided to just start looking into the possibilities of having those veins removed," said Jacquie Adorno, who is a patient at The Vein Treatment Center in New York.

Dr. Ousaima Al-Misky of The Vein Treatment Center said medical procedures can remove the unsightly and painful veins.

"For the smaller veins, the treatment of choice is injection treatments. What we do is inject a mild chemical solution into the vein, so that it can irritate the vein, allowing it to close down," she said.

"I had my first treatment 10 days ago, and I did notice a difference immediately. I had no problems going to the beach but wearing shorts in the summer, I didn't feel comfortable doing, so I'll be wearing shorts this summer," said Kerri Davidson, another patient from The Vein Treatment Center.

There are also some exercises you can do to control and even prevent spider veins, according to Good Housekeeping's beauty writer Kim Daly.

"Staying active helps to improve your cardiovascular system. Even small movements like stretching up like a ballerina while you're standing in line or waiting for an elevator can help. When it comes to sitting, we've all been taught to be very ladylike, but this is actually bad because it cuts of circulation. So instead, you want to sit with both feet on the floor," said Daly.

She said over-the-counter creams that claim to reduce the size and appearance of veins don't always live up to their promises.

"Unfortunately, creams that contain vitamin K don't necessarily reduce the appearance of leg veins. One cream that does show some promise is Avon's Anew Spider Vein Therapy. It was shown in Avon studies to reduce the appearance of spider veins by up to 50 percent after eight weeks," said Daly.
