POSTED: 1:16 pm EST December 18, 2005

Makes 2 cups - 4 servings

This is applesauce for adults, adding a little kick to a light dessert, do-ahead snack or portion of a brunch menu. It can be refrigerated for up to 3 days.

2 Granny Smith apples, peeled and cut into ½-inch chunks
2 Bartlett pears, peeled and cut into ½-inch chunks
¼ cup water
1 tablespoon packed brown sugar (see Tip)
2 tablespoons almond-flavored liqueur, such as Amaretto

Combine the apples, pears and water in a medium saucepan; cover and cook over low heat until very tender, about 15 minutes.

Use a spoon to mash the fruit to the desired consistency, chunky or smooth. Add the sugar and amaretto; stir until the sugar is dissolved.

Serve at room temperature or refrigerate in a covered container and serve later chilled.
