Brownie Bake-Off

Love brownies but wonder if prepackaged mixes can measure up to homemade? The Good Housekeeping Institute food pros tested brownies made from scratch against five boxed supermarket varieties to find out if store-bought could beat Mom's recipe.

The winner of the brownie bake-off? The Pillsbury Fudge Supreme Chocolate Extreme ($2.21; 800-767-4466; www.pillsburybaking.com) boxed brand. It scored brownie points for perfect flavor, chewy texture and a homemade look.

Earning second honors was Ghirardelli Premium Double Chocolate Brownie Mix ($2.99; 800-457-7744; www.continentalmills.com). The brownies were gooey and fudgy, and had the perfect level of sweetness.

The homemade batch, which followed the "One Bowl Brownie Recipe" found on the Baker's Chocolate wrapper, landed in the middle at third place. This recipe produced a dense chocolate flavor that reminded testers more of fudge than a brownie.
