It probably is one of the most famous yards in the country. With more than 8,000 visitors a day, Harvard Yard not only gets a lot of foot traffic but boasts one of the greenest, healthiest lawns around.

NewsCenter 5's David Brown reported that Harvard landscapers are sharing their secrets with you.

The sign boasts that green is the new crimson at Harvard University, but the true sign is found not hanging from a post, but growing in the yard.

The 16 acres of green space that makes up Harvard Yard hasn't had a chemical fertilizer, herbicide or insecticide in more than a year. What is being sprayed is an organic tea.

"What we do is try to mimic nature and take these valuable resources and compost those appropriately and bring them back and introduce them back to the landscape in the forms of compost and compost teas," said Wayne Carbone, of landscape services for Harvard University.

It is a holistic approach to lawn care. First, landscape services rigorously tested the soil to figure out its biology to determine what organic matter should be added to feed the soil. With the right balance of biological and eco friendly compounds, the soil is enriched, creating a healthier environment for grass to grow.

"Everything is natural. We don't have to worry about people walking on the grass afterward or laying down on the grass afterward. Everyone can enjoy it as soon as we are done," said Kieran Clyne, of Harvard landscaping.

"No. 1 benefit is we've been able to eliminate all synthetic fertilizers and harmful chemicals. No. 2, we've seen a reduction in water usage, which we think is very important," Carbone said.

The university has already seen savings. It has managed to reduce irrigation use by 30 percent, saving close to 2 million gallons of water a year.

For about $100, you can build your own organic tea brewer. All you need is PVC pipe, your own compost, a trash can and an aquarium motor.
