More chauffeurs are behind the wheel of hybrids than ever before, driving around carbon footprint-conscious clients."I think that if everybody makes these little steps, cumulatively, we can all make a difference. So I am interested in transportation, and if I can do it in an environmentally responsible way, then that's great," said Diane Anton.Anton is helping to drive the growing trend among the conspicuous consumer. At Commonwealth Worldwide Chauffeured Transportation, the parking lot is still home to the stretch limousine, but more spots are being made for the Prius."Our customers are used to a more luxurious vehicle than a Prius. But we are offering it to those people who are concerned about ecology and are trying to help the environmental movement," said Dawson Rutter, of Commonwealth Worldwide Chauffeured Transportation. The Prius emits about 65 percent less carbon dioxide and 90 percent fewer pollutants than a limo. It also uses one-third less gas.The company's fuel costs are about $100,000 a month, and with gas prices soaring the hybrids make financial and environmental sense.Commonwealth also saves on fuel by replacing the air in all of the tires with nitrogen. The stable compound keeps the tires filled evenly, improving gas mileage by two miles per gallon."I think that as we become more aware of our impact, our carbon footprint, and our impact on the environment, we started to look at different ways that were available to us to save electricity and to save fuel," Rutter said.
