BOSTON -- Nearly two months ago, the Johnson Family of Medfield, Mass., had its small farmhouse torn down. In its place, a fabulous new home was built. It is totally accessible to the family's 6-year-old son, William, who is disabled.NewsCenter 5's Amalia Barreda reported that it all began when the Johnsons were chosen by the ABC show "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.""The transformation of 3 Hospital Road is nothing like I could have ever imagined," resident Heidi Johnson said.During the renovation, the family shipped off to Arizona for a vacation. The family was chosen because William, confined to a motorized scooter because he suffers from spinal muscular atrophy, had additional limitations imposed on him because of the old farmhouse in which they lived. The new house and the property around it totally accommodates his disability."Just when he's in one room and I can call him and he can come to me and I don't have to go get him and he can chase friends around," Heidi Johnson said."Instead of having to pick him up, bring him in, he zips right along. It's great. It's one more step towards normalcy," Tripp Johnson said."My mom and dad don't have to follow us everywhere because they're afraid William will go over a bump and hurt himself really badly," sister Abby Johnson said.Mom said that it's been six weeks of happy tears."And I go, 'That's amazing. Look at that. He's going to be able to do that.' So, I'll cry, and William will come in and say, 'Are you crying again?'" she said. You can watch ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition Sunday at 8 p.m. on Channel 5.
