Professor Wrestling: 'SummerSlam' Results!

Hogan, Michaels Steal Show

Listen up!

Class is in session.

Sunday night Washington, D.C., it was WWE "SummerSlam" in the promotion's second-biggest show of the year, featuring the best of the "Raw" and "Smackdown!" rosters. What happened? Read on.

U.S. Title Match: Orlando Jones vs. Chris Benoit
What Should Happen:
Like Angle, Benoit slums with the mid-card talent. Hopefully he'll carry Jones to a decent match. If I were writing things, I'd have Jones win in smarmy fashion, perhaps even hurting Benoit. If WWE isn't going to keep Benoit in the world title hunt, this is as good as anything else. Jones can also learn a few things from the Rabid Wolverine.

What Will Happen: Jones wins by disqualification, retaining title.

What Did Happen: Benoit wins this one immediately, forcing Jones to submit via Crippler Crossface.

No Time Limit Match: Eugene vs. Kurt Angle
What Should Happen: The winner gets Angle's Olympic gold medal, which Eugene won a few weeks back. I'm hoping Angle wins and Eugene goes on another extended layoff. I've never liked the Eugene character, and I never will. Angle, while slumming here, is doing a great job with what he has to work with.

What Will Happen: Angle wins with the submission. They can't have him lose to Eugene can they?

What Did Happen: No, they can't. Thank God. Angle gets his medal back. See ya, Gene.

Challenge Match: Edge vs. Matt Hardy
What Should Happen: As I said a few weeks ago, the greatest thing about Edge winning a title bout contract (the thing in his black suitcase) at "WrestleMania" is that he can lose every big match, and still not lose his overall momentum. This is a perfect case for that. Here, Hardy can get his revenge, with Edge still holding the prize.

What Will Happen: Matt Hardy takes it, despite interference from that harlot, Lita.

What Did Happen: Edge beats up Matt so badly, the ref stops the match. Edge wins.

Ladder Match: Eddie Guerrero vs. Rey Mysterio
What Should Happen: The winner gets custody of Dominic, Eddie's natural son who Rey raised (according to the storyline, at least.) If I were the booker, Rey would keep his unbeaten streak alive against Eddie. These two have a few more PPV matches to go.

What Will Happen: Rey wins, but in total frustration Eddie steals the kid -- as a heel would do.

What Did Happen: Rey takes it, as Eddie's wife interferes. Great stuff.

Challenge Match: Undertaker vs. Randy Orton
What Should Happen: This "WrestleMania" rematch will most certainly have Mr. Orton in the winner's circle. It's really the only lock on the card. Why? UT doesn't need to win, Orton needs momentum after the long injury layoff, and this isn't "WrestleMania," where Taker never loses.

What Will Happen:Orton wins. Bet the nest egg.

What Did Happen: Orton wins with some help from his dad, Cowboy Bob.

WWE Championship Match: John Cena vs. Chris Jericho
What Should Happen: I know Cena is doing just fine as a crossover rap star, but wouldn't it be nice if Y2J had another title run as a chicken heel? I love chicken heels as champions! It's entertainment folks!

What Will Happen: Mr. McMahon has poured too much money into Cena to have Fozzy's frontman be the champ. Cena retains belt.

What Did Happen: Cena gets the pin, keeps the belt.

World Heavyweight Championship Match: Batista vs. JBL
What Should Happen: This is a "No Holds Barred" match, so look for plenty of gore. As I stated earlier, it would be nice if the promotion had a heel wearing some serious gold. JBL would again be perfect. But that might be far too entertaining.

What Will Happen: Here's my upset pick of the night: JBL gets the cheap win, taking the title away from big Dave.

What Did Happen: Big Dave pounds JBL into the ground, retains belt.

Challenge Match: Hulk Hogan vs. Shawn Michaels
What Should Happen: I would make Hulk Hogan do some signature moves (which the crowd loves) and some unexpected moves we've never seen before, just to vex HBK. I would also fly in Bret Hart (who is promoting a new WWE DVD) to be in Hogan's corner -- and have him turn on the Hulkster, aligning with Michaels at the end of the match. Vince, if you like this idea, drop me a line and we can talk about my writing fees. I won't break your bank. And if you want me to appear on camera, only in the mask, pal.

What Will Happen:Michaels wins cleanly after Hogan shows his stuff.

What Did Happen: Hogan wins cleanly after Michaels shows his stuff. The match went about 20 minutes, and both guys did a great job. And unexpected show-stopper.

Time now to total up my correct predictions vs. my slight script miscalculations. For the record, I had four right this time around, and five wrong. Not great, but not awful. If that were my baseball batting average, I'm still headed to the Hall of Fame.

That's it.

Class dismissed!
