Celebrity Chatter: Fonda's Monster Had Real-Life Inspiration

POSTED: 2:58 pm EDT May 16, 2005

You either love her or hate her, but after this weekend, there's no denying that Jane Fonda has made a comeback. She's carved out her place once again in Hollywood with the success of this weekend's "Monster-In-Law."

Celebrity Chatter Michelle SolomonCritics were mixed on the comedy film with co-star Jennifer Lopez, but there's no denying that Fonda gave it her all as a veteran television anchor whose topsy-turvy life is facing a fever pitch.

No stranger to film roles with some strong cinematic genes (think dad Henry Fonda), Fonda said she had an inspiration for her role of Viola Fields, the over-dramatic, over-the-top mother-in-law-to-be in the movie.

She's been quoted as saying that some of the character exhibits characteristics of her favorite ex-husband Ted Turner. Fonda said that the eccentric media mogul is the perfect mix of outrageousness and lovability.

"I had the privilege and pleasure of spending 10 years with him, and talk about someone who's bigger than life and over the top," Fonda told the Associated Press.

"So it sort of gave me permission when Viola came along to borrow a bit from Ted. Not the monster part, because he's not a monster. But just not being afraid of being outrageous, is what it was."

Meanwhile, the 67-year-old Georgia resident looked incredibly smashing in clothes that were made specifically for the movie. When a viewer wrote to me to ask me what designer Fonda was wearing as Viola Fields so that she could purchase some of the tailored suits, I had to tell her to seek out a dressmaker.

It wasn't a label designer, but costume designer Kym Barrett. Almost every detail of Viola's outfits was created from scratch.

"Kym builds clothes the way they used to in the old days when I started out," said Fonda in the movie's production notes. "It was one of the exciting things about Hollywood back then. You'd go to the wardrobe department at the studio and there'd be 40 seamstresses, and these dummies from the tiniest to the shapeliest, from Audrey Hepburn to Marilyn Monroe," she said.

And what about the crucifix that played such a major role in the ladies who lunch scene? Credit that to Barrett, too.

"Dana Schneider made those for me," said Barrett. "The crucifix also needed to be very overdone to serve its purpose."

Fonda has workout videos and a new best-selling memoir. Maybe Jane Fonda clothing, the Viola Fields collection, isn't too much of a stretch.

The cast of the sixth and final "Star Wars" movie attended the world premiere in Cannes, but as if director George Lucas and the stars of the film on the red carpet weren't enough, Natalie Portman showed up looking like Sinead O'Connor.

Portman, who has a full head of hair as Padme in the movie, showed off the new hairstyle, but the buzzcut is for a film she's shooting in Berlin, "V for Vendetta." Portman said she's growing accustomed to her GI Jane hair because it feels "soft."

Brad Pitt's Move To London?

Brad Pitt has had an interest in London ever since I interviewed him there a few years ago at The Dorchester Hotel when he was promoting "Sinbad."

Now the British press is saying that Pitt may be buying a place in London to be closer to rumored love Angelina Jolie, who lives full time in Buckinghamshire, near London.

But in defense of Pitt, he's been talking about making a movie about London's Millennium Dome heist in 2000, and a residence there would put him closer to the action.
