BOSTON -- A mega lottery jackpot is up for grabs Friday as the Mega Millions drawing reaches an estimated $205 million.
NewsCenter 5's Amalia Barreda reported that the jackpot comes at a time many states are considering selling lottery tickets online. Two months and 14 draws without a winner has resulted in the building up of the jackpot."I've sold 838 tickets thus far today. Normal day is maybe 100 to 200 if it's a decent pot," said Tom O'Shaughnessy, who owns Little Variety store in Newton, Mass.Mega Millions tickets are flying out of O'Shaughnessy's store."We just checked with the lottery sales team and we're experiencing about $2,700 a minute that is being wagered right now on the game. I mean, big jackpots really get people excited. They get the lottery agents excited. People see it on TV and they want to take a chance," Massachusetts State Treasurer Timothy Cahill said. However, Cahill said he opposes people taking a chance on the Internet. Several states, including New Hampshire, are pushing for lottery ticket sales online. Cahill said that the rules now make it illegal and that's how he wants to keep it."I think the way we operate the games are aboveboard and legitimate. They are games of chance and when you go on the Internet a lot of things can happen. There are a lot of scams that we are constantly finding out about and are trying to stop and are associating themselves with the Massachusetts State Lottery and they're no good," Cahill said.O'Shaughnessy also opposes online lottery sales because the lottery is crucial to his business."It's great for a little guy like me. I mean, it really brings people in," O'Shaughnessy said.Mega Millions is played in 11 states with California planning to join later in the year. If you bought a ticket, tune in to the drawing at 11:10 p.m. on Channel 5.
