Toy Fair Debuts Include 'Sith' Vader, Talking 'Scarface'

Companies Give Sneak Peek At Product In New York

POSTED: 12:54 pm EST February 25, 2005

Not so long ago in a galaxy not so far away -- in 1977, to be exact -- filmmaker George Lucas had the foresight to secure merchandising rights for the soon-to-be classic "Star Wars." And even while the first line of action figures didn't come out until after the film's release, Lucas' move soon revolutionized the movie toy industry.

Flash forward nearly 30 years later to New York City and Toy Fair 2005. It's a bittersweet occasion, in a way. That's because this week, the toy line for Lucas' final film in the saga, "Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith" made its debut.

Sure, action figures, vehicles and role-playing toys from all six films will no doubt be made for years to come, but since it's presumably the last "Star Wars" film (come on, George, there's room for three more), it's really the beginning of the end of a wonderful time for toy lovers big and small.

If there's any consolation, Lucas' move to market his film with action figures and toys gave birth to countless other movie toy lines over the years, and this year's Toy Fair, which ended Wednesday, had no shortage of them.

The great thing is, the toymakers at Toy Fair proved that they don't have short memories. While a lot of companies debuted toys for films coming out this year, many are still pumping out product from classic films -- and when one of them includes a talking version of Tony Montana, you know you're in for some fun.

Here's a look at what kind of movie toys select licensees debuted at Toy Fair this week:

Hasbro: Hasbro has already debuted four "preview" action figures: "Revenge of the Sith," including a new villain, General Grievous, as well as a "preview" vehicle, Anakin's Jedi Starfighter. Come April 2 the company will debut a full line of toys and games in correlation with the film, including 4-inch and 7-inch action figures of such characters as Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Darth Vader and Chewbacca, that have such features as "lightsaber attack," "quick draw action" or "Wookiee rage."

Hasbro also debuted its "Revenge of the Sith" Attacktix, a new battle figure game; a DVD-rom version of "Star Wars" trivial pursuit, role-playing lightsabers and the "Sith" packaged version of a popular toy that debuted last year, Darth Vader's Voice Changer. One of my personal favorites in "Darth Tater," a "Star Wars" variation on the iconic toy Mr. Potato Head!

The company will also be busy this year with action figures and plush toys from the computer-generated family comedies "Madagascar" and "Chicken Little," as well as figures and plushes from the big screen adaptation of the C.S. Lewis classic, "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe."

Toy Biz: The company that launched a massive line of "Spider-Man 2" toys last year is working this year on another Marvel Comics classic, "Fantastic Four."

The toy line from the film includes 6-inch and 12-inch action figure lines including the core characters Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, the Human Torch and the Thing; a "stretch" version of Mr. Fantastic (reminiscent of the classic Stretch Armstrong and Stretch Monster toys of yesteryear), role-playing toys, which include a mask of the Thing, as well the replicas of the rocky character's hands and feet that come with appropriate sound effects.

The company is also continuing with its popular "Lord of the Rings" action figure line, and select figures will include sound bases that feature dialogue from the films. And the dialogue isn't limited to the likes of such characters as Frodo, Sam, Aragorn and Gandalf. Look for something from the "Eye of Sauron," too. He'll certainly be looking out for you -- if you're hiding the One Ring, that is.

Mattel: The toy company will begin anew with its Batman movie license with action figures and vehicles from "Batman Begins." Figures include Batman and Bruce Wayne, his foes the Scarecrow and Ra's Al Ghul and Batman's mentor Henri Ducard, and vehicles will include the radically redesigned Batmobile.

Also showcased were figures of Rodney Copperbottom and the his metal counterparts from the upcoming computer-generated family comedy "Robots," and the company will also be releasing figures and toys from the fourth Harry Potter movie, "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire."

SLIDESHOW: Toy Fair 2005 Movie Toys

INTERACTIVE: Toy Fair 2005

NECA: Just as its first series of "Pirates of the Caribbean" 7-inch action figures started to hit shelves (including Capt. Jack Sparrow, Will Turner, Capt. Barbossa and a Cursed Pirate), the company announced that a second series, which includes another Capt. Jack, a "cursed" version of Barbossa and the film's brave damsel, Elizabeth Swan. Also coming are figures from the upcoming big screen adaptation of Frank Miller's "Sin City" graphic novels, as well as an action figure of Patrick Bateman from "American Psycho."

SOTA Toys: Focusing on horror-film staples, SOTA is releasing an action figure line titled "Now Playing," featuring "The Toxic Avenger," "Darkman" and in its first series, and in the near future, will release such characters as the Cursed Imhotep from "The Mummy Returns" and one of the "Killer Klowns from Outer Space."

Sideshow Collectibles

Sideshow Collectibles: The high-end collectible maker will be releasing several new statues, busts and prop replicas from "The Lord of the Rings" in 2005, as well as more 12-inch figures from the movies of horror icons "Freddy" and "Jason." Also coming are more 12-inch figures from the "Planet of the Apes" and James Bond movie series, and figures of legendary actor John Wayne.

The company is also releasing several 1/4-scale figures, including Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Darth Vader from the classic "Star Wars" trilogy, more Universal Monster icons including a "Silver Screen" version of Boris Karloff as Frankenstein's Monster, the Thing from the upcoming "Fantastic Four" movie and Tony Montana from "Scarface."

The "must-have" from Sideshow, though, will have to be the 12-inch version of Montana from "Scarface," featuring some of the salacious lines Al Pacino spewed in the film. The figure will have an R-rated sound chip that says such lines that I can't print here, but trust me, the F-bombs will be flying.

I guess the release of the figure gives the famous line from the film, "Say hello to my little friend," an entirely new meaning.
