A Boston hotel has been named the best small city hotel in the country by Travel + Leisure readers.

The Eliot Hotel
The Eliot Hotel topped Travel + Leisure's list as the No. 1 Small City hotel in the United States and in Canada in the magazines survey for its 14th annual World's Best Awards.

The Eliot, which has been owned by the same family since 1939, was also chosen as the 19th best hotel in the world, the hotel announced Friday.

The Travel + Leisure survey asked readers to rate hotels based on location, rooms and facilities, service, food and restaurants and value.

The Eliot Hotel, located at 370 Commonwealth Avenue, is among a handful of small, independent hotels in Boston and takes particular pride in its restaurants -- Clio and Uni Sashimi Bar, which are operated by James Beard Award winner Ken Oringer.

The Eliot Hotel
"Considering the competition around the country in the urban hotel category, to be named #1 in the U.S. and Canada is astounding. We're humbled," said Pascale Schlaefli, The Eliot Hotel general manager.

The Eliot was built in 1925 by the family of Charles Eliot, one of Harvard University's leaders at the turn of the last century, and designed after the Champs Elysee in Paris. The hotel was later purchased by the Nathan Ullian family, which still operates the property.

The World's Best Award winners in other categories will be detailed in the magazine’s August issue and can be viewed by clicking here.
